The Europeans Union’s E-Regulations may be at loggerheads with the UK’s internet laws if the new provisions to the digital economy bill go through. This was the gist of a cautionary statement made by internet law expert Professor Lilian Edwards.

Professor Edwards was referring to the stringent punishments authorised by these new regulations for offenders of copyright laws through illegal downloads or sharing of copy right protected material over the internet. According to the new provisions, owners and providers of networks can be held liable for actions of users who engage in illegal activity over their networks.

This will cause several problems in actual implementation, as the user engaging in illegal download cannot be correctly identified in such environment, especially if he/she is using a WiFi connection belonging to another person. This will essentially hinder any growth or freedom in the industry, as severe and unreasonable restrictions will dampen interest for development.
