Hollywood Revives Edgar Rice Burroughs Heroes for Film
Have you ever wanted to explore distant worlds? Did you dream of being the hero in a great movie? Have you thought what it would be like to meet and fall in love with a beautiful princess from an exotic kingdom? These are the elements that make up many of the fantastic stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Although he is best known as the creator of Tarzan of the Apes, Edgar Rice Burroughs created many other heroes. Carson Napier of Venus, John Carter of Mars, and David Innes of Pellucidar are three of Burroughs’ most well-known heroes after Tarzan.
Oddly, only one of these other storylines, Pellucidar, has ever been transformed into film. There are dozens of Tarzan movies and several Tarzan television shows but the John Carter and Carson Napier stories have not (yet) been adapted to screen or television. But that’s all about to change. In fact, John Carter will make it to DvD in 2009 thanks to a small independent film called The Asylum and he’ll shine on the silver screen starting in 2012 in the first of three movies that the Disney Studios and Pixar Animation are collaborating on.
Angelic Pictures announced that it is producing a Pirates of Venus movie based on the Carson Napier book of the same name. The movie is scheduled for release in 2011. But fans seem to be most excited about seeing the John Carter of Mars movies. Hundreds of news articles have been written about the John Carter movies, while barely a word has been mentioned about the Pirates of Venus film.
Nonetheless, as the Internet warms up to the idea of celebrating the creativity of Edgar Rice Burroughs 100 years after his first story was published, you can find people offering John Carter of Mars merchandise (largely books) on the Web. It is to be expected that a huge commercial bonanza will develop around the inevitable merchandising. There will be clothing, books, comic books, toys, and more if Disney handles the marketing like it has for other movies.
Who knows? Maybe in ten years your children will be wearing John Carter of Mars pajamas to bed, taking their lunch to school in John Carter lunch boxes, and cruising the streets on John Carter skate boards.
