The government is planning to launch a website named data.gov.uk that will make government data available to the common people. People will be able to access essential government data for reference purposes.

Virgin Media’s recent network upgrade for supporting 50Mb speed has become a reason for celebration, not only for the company but also for its prospective 12 million subscribers for this new high speed offering. The company’s network is now sturdy enough to handle three times the original load. This feat was achieved in less than two years.

As a superb marketing ploy, Virgin Media also launched its first time branded laptops by the name of “Freedom”, which is essentially a netbook and is designed for speeds up to 50Mb and comes with some pre installed software. North East of the UK would soon see the launch of Freerunner, which is the latest free public network, initiated by Owen Geddes. Geddes was also involved in the set up of the well known ‘The Cloud’ network.

Public networks had grown in popularity back in 2002 when every other coffee shop or restaurant was serving as an access site. The service has however been marred with high costs and low revenues, and over time, a lot of these network providers shut shop.

Microsoft has announced that its new operating system Windows 7 will have features that will bring about major improvement in the mobile broadband experience.

The Redmond, Washington based company revealed in its blog that it has tied up with companies like Asus, T-Mobile and Fujitsu Siemens to develop support for embedded mobile broadband devices.

Asus gave a demonstration of the new features in the recently ended Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The Eee PC, manufactured by Asus and 3.5G connectivity enabled by Huawei’s EM770 embedded module was at display. The PC runs on Windows 7 and takes the high-speed broadband connectivity experience to the next level. The new features will also increase the robustness of mobile broadband. The EM770 is one of the first embedded modules to be made especially for Windows 7.

Although Microsoft plans to release Windows 7 by the end of this year, most industry insiders believe that as with previous OS releases from Microsoft, this one could also see long delays and the product would probably be available to the general public not before 2010. Moreover, it has been observed in previous big releases that most customers prefer to sit on the fence until a release has gone through a bug detection and debugging phase.
