Nancy Rooks, Elvis’s maid at Gracelend recalls: “One of the bodyguards told me to come to the front door and Elvis said, ‘Do you like that car?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ And he said, ‘It’s yours’”*.

Publicly, Elvis used his fame and popularity to host shows and benefits that would raise money for causes he was passionate about. After serving in the US Army for two years, Elvis came back and hosted a charity benefit in Hawaii, raising $65,000 for the Memorial at Pearl Harbor for the U.S.S Arizona. The fund was struggling at the time, but after Elvis’ contribution, the memorial opened later that year.

Today, Elvis Presley’s philanthropic endeavours are survived by the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation and the Elvis Presley Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of Memphis. The memory of the King lives on through his music, persona and kindness.

The inspection programme started by the HSE recently will see inspectors call on construction sites unexpectedly to ensure whether safety procedures are being adhered to. This programme has been instigated by the HSE to check the hazardous working conditions at work sites in Britain.

Between the years 2008 and 2009, 11, 264 workers were left injured and 53 workers died at construction sites all over Britain. The HSE hopes to reduce the number of avoidable deaths and injuries through its recent initiatives.

Many people die every year as a result of unsafe working conditions on site, said HSE’s Chief Inspector of Construction, Philip White. He said that there has been some growth seen in the way some parts of the construction industry in terms of worker safety, but procedures still appear to be lax, especially where refurbishment work in small projects is concerned.

The HSE finds it intolerable that some construction businesses have a reckless and carefree approach towards the wellbeing of their workers. By taking small steps and following certain procedures for safety, they can easily prevent accidents from happening on site, says Philip White.

The HSE has been carrying out various safety inspections for better understanding and awareness in the industry for the last two years and White hopes that the latest report from the inspection will show that there has been some improvement.

In the previous year, there were 270 notices to stop unsafe work issued after the HSE conducted inspections of 1,759 construction sites and 2,145 contractors all over Britain. Most of these notices were made out to sites where operations were being conducted at heights.

White also said that the HSE would not hesitate in taking strict action against those who fail to comply with the safety norms and put workers at risk.

Speculations are high that American Bank JP Morgan may move its official European Headquarters from its planned site at Riverside South in Canary Wharf to several locations in the city of London.

JP Morgan had initially bought land for development at the Canary Wharf in November 2008, costing nearly £237m. The purchase agreement between the bank and the land owners had a stipulation that the Bank could back out of the agreement anytime before the end of 2010. However, if the Bank were to choose such an option then it would have to pay a penalty of £76m. The current value of the property owned by JP Morgan is close to £1.5b but despite this high value, it is considering leasing out property or moving to other developing sites.

Jamie Dimon, Chief Executive, JPMorgan was the first to question this decision to go ahead with the Canary Wharf property, largely because of his anger towards the changes in the development scheme, which included reducing tax on bonuses. This move of the government made banking as well as other institutions to reconsider their decision to move into properties in London. JP Morgan is also considering leasing out several offices within London to house its employees.
